Important Needlework collected by the late Sir Frederick Richmond Bt.

Timothy Sammons Fine Art Agents was instructed to sell an extremely rare and important collection of 17th and 18th Century needlework collected by the late Sir Frederick Richmond Bt.(1873-1953)

Sir Frederick Richmond Bt. was a key figure in the drapery world succeeding Ernest Debenham as Chairman of Debenham and Freebody, Chairman of Harvey Nichols and Govenor of the Hudson Bay Company which controlled much of the trade in North America.

He started collecting in 1907 at a time when large family collections were being dispersed at auction. His purchases were displayed in his country house and London home - Westoning Manor, Bedfordshire and Kensington Palace Gardens.

The collection was sold as a single owner sale at auction. Items of particular interest included: a rare English needlework casket, mid 17th century, which opened to reveal a garden of pressed silk; a lady's coif, beautifully embroidered with flowers; an unfinished needlework mirror of the four elements.
