Lewis Carroll's Alice, a unique archive of photographs, books, letters, papers and personal effects of the original 'Alice in Wonderland', was sold by Timothy Sammons Fine Art Agents through auction on behalf of the Alice Family Trust.
 

Alice Liddell was Lewis Carroll's muse for a tale that has become the most loved children's story in history. Alice was also his favourite photographic model and posed for many of his most famous photographs.
 
  

 


 
  
One of the many highlights of the sale was Alice Liddell's personal photograph album, the most important collection of Carroll's photography in the world, which contains photographs of the Liddell sisters and images of Carroll and his Oxford contemporaries. This album sold for £465,500 (US$656,215).

Other highlights of the sale included the dedication copy of Alice's Adventures in Under Ground, inscribed "To her whose namesake one happy summer day inspired this story" which sold for £157,250 (US$221,675), and a photograph of Alice Liddell as 'the Beggar Maid' which sold for £179,500 (US$253,041) against a pre-sale estimate of £50,000 - £80,000 (US$72,000 - US$115,000).
