This extremely rare and fine blue and white 'dragon' vase dating from the Emperor Qianlong (1735-1796) in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) was sold at auction by Timothy Sammons Fine Art Agents in Hong Kong in 1999 for HK$4,500,000 (US$ 579,590), including the Buyer's Premium. |
| William & Mary Royal Yacht Model |
This highly important navy board model of a William & Mary royal yacht was sold on behalf of John Montagu, 11th Earl of Sandwich.
Navy Board models are framed and part planked models constructed during the period of 1650-1780 and represent some of the finest ship models ever made. They portray in perfect detail the form and complex structure of naval ships including internal fittings and flooring.
This 1:32 scale model was an early example, dating from 1689-1694. It is thought to represent the Royal Yacht "Fubbs" when it was refitted with new arms, internal and external decorations on the accession of King William III in 1689. The name "Fubbs" was apparently used by Charles II as a term of endearment for his favourite female friend, the Duchess of Portsmouth. Its early date coupled with the royal connection made it, at the time, one of the finest examples to have sold at auction.
At the time it achieved a record price for a ship model sold at auction, achieving £287,500 (US$439,875), including the Buyer's Premium. |
