The Somerley Desk
A Regency brass-inlaid and ormolu mounted mahogany
writing table attributed to Marsh and Tatham. The desk
was probably commissioned by Henry Baring in 1811. The robust architecture
of the desk, with its symbolic and hieroglyphic reliefs
epitomise the 'antique' fashion, combining Egyptian,
Grecian and Roman elements, that was being promoted by
the connoisseur Thomas Hope in the decoration of his
London mansion. This unique table was sold through Timothy Sammons Fine Art Agents at auction
for £553,750 (US$849,729), including the Buyer's Premium.
